Introduction

Easy and popular route to the Wintrigmatte huts. The panorama from the summit, somewhat closed off to the south by the imposing proximity of the Punta di Terrarossa, is spectacular to the north with views of the Bernese Oberland and the peaks of the northern side of the lower Valais.

Description

From the left-hand side of the Posta bar, go up towards the start of the anchors and, skirting them on the right, after a few metres you will reach the track of a track with clear snowmobile tracks. Climb up a few hairpin bends in the forest and in a few minutes you come to the houses of the village of Rotwald (from where you can already catch a glimpse of your destination); cross it and, still following the little road, you come to the ski slope, which you skirt for a short distance on the right and then cross it and take the continuation of the evident track that continues halfway up the slope on the left. Continuing on a moderate incline, you come to the pretty village of Wasenalp: cross this too and, after passing a fork with a track branching off to the right, continue along the little road that leads into the increasingly sparse forest. After a few curves halfway up the slope, you arrive at the Wintrigmatte huts, above which you can now clearly see the collar, with the obvious avalanche guard, from which the ridge that climbs up to the summit begins. From the little road, climb up behind the Wintrigmatte huts, with the slope now becoming decidedly steeper, and, now zigzagging and now with a few traverses, reach the summit of the col near the avalanche guard. From here, turn sharply to the right to climb the ridge that, steep in some short sections, leads to the summit. On the slope that leads from the Wintrigmatte huts to the avalanche barrier, care must be taken, in the event of recent snowfall or after windy days that remould the snowpack, for the possible detachment of small avalanche fronts. Just before reaching the summit, there are also a couple of short, somewhat exposed traverses to be made.
