Berrio damon, from Ollomont

Access

From Aosta, follow the Gran San Bernardo state road to deviate towards Valpelline. One km after this centre, turn left towards Ollomont. There is a car park in the town hall square and the trail begins.

Introduction

Classic winter trip to Ollomont, such as By, Champillon and La Chevriere. During the last war, the chalet was occupied by a group of partisans under the command of Ettore Castiglioni, who helped the persecuted to escape to Switzerland, as recounted in the book "The Void Behind". The word 'berrio' is of Celtic-Salassa origin and means boulder, stone.

Description

From the little square in Ollomont (car park), go up the steep little road indicated by the signs for the Regondi Bivouac and Col Cornet, which leads to the hamlet of Cognen, which can also be reached by car, continuing towards Glassier and turning right at the first crossroads. Continue along the little inter-pasture track that, with many bends (on the left, the huts of the Berrio dèsot alpine pasture, which can be reached when you are at their height, are a reference point for altitude), reaches a plateau from which there is a fine view of the Grivola and the Col de Champillon. We then leave the summer route to enter the forest and cross a small ridge at the top of which we can see the alpine hut. You then descend into a small valley at the foot of the steep slope, which you can ascend directly with snowshoes, and with skis with a few bends, leading to the alpine pasture.
