Introduction

The Tofane were in the First World War the site of bitter fighting. It is worth mentioning the Castelletto where, on 11 July 1916 at 3.30 a.m., the Italians exploded 35 tons of gelatine in a 507-metre tunnel, dug in six months of hard work by the Alpine troops. The blast subsequently allowed the objective to be conquered.

Description

Path 403 with increasingly narrower hairpin bends enters the Valon de Tofana and Forcella Fontananegra, where there are numerous structures from the First World War. Just beyond the forcella in an area dotted with cyclopean boulders stands the refuge. Opposite is the Tofana di Rozes rock face, where the normal ascent route to the summit is located. On the right is the Masarié, which leads into Val Travenazes and the Fanis. The view down into the valley is spectacular.
