Access

Leaving Chania, follow the signs to the airport along the main provincial road. After about 8 kilometres, ignore the last deviation towards the airport and turn left towards the Akrotiri peninsula. Continue along this road to the village of Rizoskloko, continuing in the direction of the beach. After passing the village, the road narrows and begins a series of steep, narrow hairpin bends with no side protection: proceed with caution, especially at exposed points. After about 5 kilometres between the hairpin bends, you will reach the clearing of the main car park 🅿️ from where the hiking trail to Seitan Limania begins.  Parking is limited, so it is advisable to arrive early. In the event of a high turnout, it is also possible to park along the straight stretch before the main area.

Introduction

Seitan Limani, also known as Stefanou Beach, is a hidden gem located on the north-eastern coast of the Akrotiri peninsula, near Chania on the island of Crete. This small cove of white sand and crystal-clear waters offers a breathtaking natural spectacle, ideal for nature and adventure lovers. The hike to the beach of Seitan Limania is short but particularly challenging, ideal for experienced or determined hikers. For this reason, it is recommended that you tackle the descent to the beach with suitable footwear. The route starts from a scenic car park, where the view of the beach is breathtaking but not entirely reassuring: at your feet, a narrow, steep path winds its way down the side of a narrow canyon. This path, which is also often trodden by curious and enterprising little goats, requires attention both because of the steepness and because of the loose stones, which can slide down with the risk of hitting those behind. The little goats have been known to rummage through unattended bags in search of food, so it is best to keep everything tightly closed while swimming.

Description

0h00' 0.00km 0m From the car park, a steep, rocky path leads down to the beach. The path is short but requires attention, being steep and with uneven terrain. Follow an initial flat section to the entrance of the gorge. Turn right and on an uneven path begin the descent to the bottom of the gorge. The path, accompanied by a rudimentary handrail (not reliable), loses height with a series of turns until it reaches the base of the gorge. Passing a few not-so-easy passages between patches of oleander (Nerium oleander), one finally reaches the beach 0h10' 0.33km 50m.  Seitan Limania beach is a small triangular-shaped bay, nestled between vertical rock walls that form a fjord of rare and evocative charm. The white sand suspended in the water gives it a deep blue, almost phosphorescent colour, making the place very special. Swimming in the fjord is a unique experience, thanks to the calm, deep waters that stretch between the rocks.

The return journey is along the same route followed during the ascent 0h10' 0.34km 50m.

The descent is considered to be of moderate difficulty, suitable for hikers with a good physical condition. Wearing sturdy footwear is essential to ensure good grip and stability.
