Introduction

An excursion of considerable natural and scenic interest, especially in early spring. Numerous species of plants and animals can be observed, including chamois, water blackbirds and marmots busy setting up their new nests with dry grass. Hunting eagles are often seen and the presence of wolves is certain, while the bearded vulture has not been sighted for some time. Arriving at the refuge, the lake is still frozen over.

Description

From the village of Sant'Anna, follow a steep road that climbs into the forest, touching the locality of Tetti Biaisa (1224 m) and the locality of Tetti Paladin (1326 m). The slope becomes gentler and we proceed through the dense beech forest (where chamois can be seen at sunset) to the Gias del Prato plateau (1529 m) where a spring gushes out. The route, slightly uphill, reaches the Chiot houses (1700 m) and from there continues to the Sottano della Sella Lake (1882 m) and then to the Bianco refuge. The descent is along the route of the ascent. For any doubts about the weather, the hut manager at Rifugio Bianco has an infallible method. I recommend setting off early in the morning and not forgetting your binoculars.
