Monte Rudo Height 2175

Introduction

Approximately opposite the Hotel Tre Cime (Dreizinnenhotel) in Landro (Höhlenstein) is a grassy clearing where you can leave your car, or you can drive to the bus stop at Lake Landro (Dϋrrensee). Monte Rudo (Rautkofel) was a very important post for Austrian troops in the First World War. From this mountain it was possible to monitor the war activities on Monte Piana, where the Italian troops were stationed. On the morning of 24 May 1915, the first day of the war, the first cannon shot was fired from Monte Rudo towards the Italian positions on Monte Piana. Later other cannon shots hit Misurina and Forcella Lavaredo.

Description

Take the Austrian military mule track leading to the Landro Fortress and, shortly after the barricade, turn right, passing above the fort. The well-preserved mule track leads into a dense forest of trees and baranci. Numerous military works, partly hidden by the dense vegetation, testify to the incredible work carried out to provide the posts with the best operating conditions. There are many hairpin bends (someone counted 71) to reach our destination. Towards about 2000 m of altitude, the forest ceases and the small barracks, the objective of our excursion, appears. From the small barracks, we can see the Cortina-Dobbiaco road and the village of Landro. Below us is over 700 metres of precipitous gully towards the road. A steep track on scree, partly landslide, and with sparse cairns leads to the summit of Teston di Monte Rudo 2607 m. where there are other posts. Return along the same route.
