Introduction

The lake is located along the path leading to the Lei pass (Lei=lake), which leads into the valley of the same name, also called Val de Ca' by the inhabitants of Piuro, where there is a large artificial lake, whose dam is on Swiss territory.
This valley belongs to the Rhine basin and is one of the few Italian territories, with Livigno and Tarvisio, north of the Alps.
Its name perhaps derives from the Latin Aqua Fracta, in hiking literature one finds both Acquafraggia and Acqua Fraggia.

Description

From Borgonuovo di Piuro, one ascends to Savogno via one of the two paths to the village, which is inhabited like Codera all year round (1.15 hours).
The panoramic one passes near the waterfalls and is equipped with a couple of convenient metal ladders, the historical one passes through the old stables used by the inhabitants of Savogno.
From Savogno (refuge), after visiting the village and stopping on the panoramic little square (statue of Don Guanella, who lived there for a few years), follow the signs for the Lei pass, which lead over a crag with a beautiful view of steep cliffs and the Acquafraggia stream, reaching Alpigia, a pastureland dotted with huts, many equipped with television dishes and solar cells.
The path, always well signposted, after crossing the torrent bends to the left, crosses a steep slope with a nice track, then bends north to reach the Ponciagna huts (fountain, memorial stone for Garibaldi partisans who fell a few days before the liberation) and with a last leap reaches the basin where the lake is located, which can be reached with a short descent.
4.30 hours.
To the left you reach the Lei pass, to the right the Madris pass. For both, 1.30 hours.
