Access

To reach the village of Farys, located in the municipality of Chambave in Valle d'Aosta, by car, take the A5 Turin-Aosta motorway. Exit at the Nus toll booth and continue along State Road 26 in the direction of Aosta. After a few kilometres, you will come to the junction for Chambave. Following the signs for the centre of the village, continue along the regional road that climbs towards Farys, crossing stretches of road characterised by hairpin bends and a narrower roadway.
The route offers convenient and direct access, but it is always advisable to pay attention to road conditions, especially in winter or in the presence of local traffic. Checking the route with an up-to-date map or navigation app can be helpful to avoid unforeseen incidents.

Introduction

In the village of Farys, a hamlet of Chambave known for its ancient winegrowing tradition and its fine wines, there is an authentic natural and historical jewel: the monumental vine of Farys. Planted more than three centuries ago, this extraordinary vine grows next to an old rural house, supported by a pergola that enhances its majesty and symbolic significance.

Description

Belonging to the indigenous Petit Rouge variety, the vine, despite its venerable age, continues to yield small bunches of grapes. Its uniqueness lies not only in its longevity and remarkable size, but also in its extraordinary resistance to phylloxera, an insect that devastated European vineyards between the 19th and 20th centuries. This exceptional specimen is thus a living testimony to the biodiversity and resilience of the Aosta Valley region.
The monumental Farys vine is included in the Registro Regionale delle Piante Monumentali, established by Regional Law No. 50 of 1990, which ensures its protection and care. It is one of more than 380 monumental plants registered in Valle d'Aosta, an extraordinary heritage of great natural and cultural value.
This vine is not only a symbol of the centuries-old agricultural tradition of Valle d'Aosta, but also a reason to visit the village of Chambave, with its evocative landscape and rich oenological heritage. A short path leads visitors up to the vine, where one can appreciate not only the beauty and grandeur of this historic plant, but also the intimate and authentic atmosphere of an area that carefully guards its roots. The monumental vine at Farys embodies the harmony between man and nature and celebrates the continuity of a wine-growing culture that is an integral part of the Aosta Valley identity.
