Sarre
Introduction
Located just a few kilometres west of Aosta, the municipality of Sarre now forms almost a single agglomeration with the regional capital, especially along the main road axis represented by the state road to Courmayeur.
Its territory, on the other hand, boasts very ancient settlements, well before the Roman Aosta: traces of a Bronze Age village have been brought to light near the hamlet of Ville-sur-Sarre, while other buildings from protohistoric times have been unearthed during the extension of the cemetery.
Description
But most of the memories of the past are, as always, linked to the Middle Ages, when Sarre was an integral part of the lordship of Bard. It was in fact this family that began the construction of the castle on the perimeter of the current one, but with a different structure. It seems that the castellania of Sarre did not bring its holders much luck: in fact, starting with the family of Bard, all the successors also quickly died out, devolving their titles to the Counts of Savoy. In 1869, Victor Emmanuel II included the castle of Sarre among the possessions of his family and used it as a hunting lodge. While the exterior dates back to 18th century renovations, the king of Italy took care of the interior, decorating it (with dubious taste) with his macabre hunting trophies. Today, the castle is owned by the Regional Administration, which has recently completed its restoration and reopened its doors to visitors.
The municipal economic fabric is obviously heavily conditioned by the proximity of the city of Aosta, with the consequent expansion of the tertiary sector and a strong commuting of residents. There is, however, also a qualified presence in the traditional agricultural sector, represented mostly by viticulture, fruit-growing and nurseries. In the upper part of the territory, cattle breeding is still present, taking advantage of the beautiful pastures that extend to the foot of Mont Fallère.
