Saint-Denis
Introduction
A medium-mountain municipality, located in the central valley along the left orographic slope of the Dora Baltea river. It was of considerable importance in the Middle Ages, as witnessed by the ruins of [[Castle of Cly]], also visible from the valley floor.Description
This building dates back to the 11th century in terms of its main core, which was later extended in the following centuries. The lordship of Cly was a branch of the Challant family, until the second half of the 14th century, when Count Amadeus VI of Savoy claimed the feudal rights because of the crimes committed by the nobleman Pietro di Cly. The seigniory changed hands several times until Baron Filiberto Roncas decided to demolish parts of the castle to recycle the stones in the construction of his palace in Chambave.
The commune's location in the middle of the mountains and its excellent exposure to the sun have always favoured agricultural activity, particularly viticulture. It is worth mentioning the production of Muscat de Chambave, which in its 'flétri' version, i.e. raisin wine, enjoyed the special appreciation of the royal family and still constitutes the flagship product of the producers' cooperative.
In the woods leading to Col San Pantaleone, a Suillus luteus var. albus Wasser & Soldatova was collected immediately after the flood, on 20 October 2000. This mushroom is very rare and was collected near the regional road leading to the Col. A mid-mountain municipality, located in the central valley along the left orographic slope of the Dora Baltea.
