Introduction

Description

It extends for about 25 km along the territory crossed by the river of the same name, between the lakes of Pusiano and Alserio to the north and the Park of Monza to the south. It embraces the hilly area of Brianza, where the landscape, as the river advances, presents ever new features: plateaus, small valleys carved out by the rivers, irrigation ditches, streams and large expanses of meadows, interspersed with more modest wooded areas. The lake area contains particularly fragile and endangered marsh environments. Here, thanks to the humid microclimate, some rare plants grow that are normally found at higher altitudes. These areas are partly protected by the Oriented Nature Reserve of the Eastern Shore of Lake Alserio, which includes, among other things, the ash and hornbeam woods of the Monguzzo hill. In the wetlands there is a significant presence of resident and migratory birds: grebes, moorhens, coots, mallards, reed warblers, herons, cormorants and collorossi. The birds feed on bleak, rudd, catfish and pike, which live in large numbers in the waters and find refuge in the reed beds and rushes along the banks. Moving southwards, the urbanised areas take over, but there are still free areas of considerable interest such as the two Sites of Community Interest Valle del Rio Cantalupa and Valle del Rio Pegorino. The area boasts great artistic interest; the river is, in fact, bordered by numerous 18th- and 19th-century villas and their gardens. In this context, the Villa Reale di Monza park and gardens complex is of exceptional value.
