After 150 metres from the motorway junction exit at Pont-Saint-Martin, turn left and take the Strada Statale in the direction of Aosta. At the first roundabout, take the second exit to continue on the . Continue for 2.2 km, passing through Donnas, until the next roundabout. At the roundabout, take the second exit to stay on the . Continue for about 3 km until you reach another roundabout near the Fortress of Bard. Here, take the third exit and take the Strada Regionale in the direction of Valle di Champorcher. Continue for 6.2 km on , passing through Hône, until you reach Pontboset. In Pontboset, turn left onto the little municipal road and continue until you reach the 🅿️ car park in front of the town hall.

Introduction

The parish church of San Grato in Pontboset is an important example of religious architecture in the Aosta Valley, with a history spanning several centuries. The original church was built between 1622 and 1624, a few years before the official foundation of the parish in 1625. Subsequently, the building was rebuilt in 1843-1844, following the design and under the direction of architect Pacifique Dallou of Donnas. The interior was further enriched in 1910 with frescoes by the painters Stornone, Sardi and Carretti. The 19th-century altar houses statues sculpted in 1706 by Biella master Serra, while the triumphal crucifix, probably dating back to 1625, is one of the oldest pieces preserved. The church is situated in a picturesque square where there is also a stone fountain, built in 1830 by the stone cutters Peraldo of Biella, which adds a further element of charm to this place of worship.

Description

The original church was built between 1622 and 1624, shortly before the foundation of the parish in 1625. It was subsequently rebuilt in 1843-44, to the design and under the direction of architect Pacifique Dallou of Donnas. In 1910, the interior walls were frescoed by the painters Stornone, Sardi and Carretti.

The altar, dating from the 19th century, contains statues made in 1706 by the Biellese master Serra. The triumphal crucifix probably dates back to 1625. In the square in front of the church is a beautiful stone fountain, built in 1830 by the stonecutters Peraldo of Biella.
