Introduction
The parish church of Saint-Marcel, dedicated to Saint Marcel, is located in the heart of the municipality of the same name in Valle d'Aosta, surrounded by a landscape that combines tradition and natural beauty. Description
The present church was consecrated on 4 August 1546 by Bishop Pierre Gazin, after the previous buildings had been destroyed by the overflowing of the Dora Baltea river in the 12th and 16th centuries. The new position, higher above the valley, guaranteed greater protection from natural events, marking a turning point in the history of the place of worship. The building is distinguished by its bell tower, built on a base that, according to historical sources from 1277, was originally a fortified tower. Even today, the loopholes visible along the shaft bear witness to this particular defensive function.
The interior of the church holds artistic treasures of great value. Particularly noteworthy is the 18th century high altar in gilded wood, a refined work on three superimposed levels, an expression of the skill of the craftsmen of the time. In the right aisle, the wooden altar dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary dates back to the 18th century, enriched by an altarpiece probably made in 1622, as indicated by the inscription on it. These artistic details make the church a place of interest not only spiritually but also culturally, ideal for lovers of sacred art.§
Not far from the church stands the Chapel of St. Roch, a small building charged with historical and religious significance. Probably founded in 1630 during the plague epidemic, the chapel was a place of prayer and protection for the local community. Inside, one can admire a polychrome wooden altar with twisted columns framing a painting of the Madonna and Child, flanked by Saints Roch and Sebastian. The chapel also preserves a canvas dedicated to Saint Roch, painted in 1633 by the Biellese painter Vincenzo Costantino, now kept in a safe place to ensure its preservation.
This religious complex, with its stratification of history and art, recounts centuries of devotion and community life.
