Introduction

Municipality in the lower Valle d'Aosta, located on the orographic right of the Dora Baltea river, which in fact divides it from the nearby town of Verrès. Although there is some evidence of its colonisation already by the Romans, it is to the Middle Ages that its fortunes can be traced.

Description

As part of the property of the bishop of Aosta, its territory was the subject of constant disputes and raids instigated by the restless lords of Verrès; with the passage of the latter seigniory to the Challant family and their acquisition of jurisdiction over Issogne, a period of prosperity began, culminating with the transformation of the ancient fortifications (including Roman walls) into the present late 15th-century castle, more akin to a Renaissance palace than a medieval fortress. From the early 15th century, the Challant residence was constantly enriched, decorated with striking frescoes and honoured by the stay of illustrious guests, including Emperor Sigismund, accompanied by Duke Amadeus VIII of Savoy. There is no historical evidence, however, of the sojourn of the King of France Charles VIII, as recalled by a local legend.

The economic fabric of the village, for centuries linked to agriculture, has undergone a marked transformation in the last century, thanks to the presence of numerous industries in the short radius comprising the municipalities between Verrès and Pont-Saint-Martin.
