Introduction

The Cillian chapel in the municipality of Saint-Vincent in Valle d'Aosta, dedicated to the Holy Innocents, is a small jewel of devotion and architecture that deserves a visit for its uniqueness and its context. Built in 1954 to fulfil a vow made by Thérèse Borbey and Vincent Gorris, it is the only private chapel in the parish of Saint-Vincent, a detail that already distinguishes it in the panorama of local religious constructions.

Description

The structure, with its quadrangular plan, is immediately striking for its façade decorated with a large fresco by the artist Italo Mus. The work depicts the sacrifice of the Holy Innocents, powerfully and delicately evoking the theme of purity and innocence, dear to Christian devotion. The interior, equally evocative, is covered with stream pebbles of different colours, creating an intimate, almost meditative atmosphere. In the centre of the floor is a section of white stones, a detail that adds further value to the whole. The altar houses another work by Italo Mus: an altarpiece depicting the Virgin Mary in an imposing red robe. With her foot she symbolically crushes the head of the serpent, an allegory of evil, thus offering a message of hope and spiritual victory. This place is not only a site of prayer, but also a living testimony to the devotional tradition of the Aosta Valley. Its architectural and artistic features, combined with the particularity of being a private chapel, make it a place of interest for anyone wishing to learn more about local history and culture, as well as an oasis of peace for those seeking a moment of reflection and recollection.
