Description
Important municipality located in the middle of the Evançon Valley, better known as the Ayas Valley. It was already inhabited in pre-Roman times, probably because of the gold mines found underground.
It was certainly an important centre in the Middle Ages, when the Abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune in the Valais, to which a large part of the valley belonged, enfeoffed the powerful Challant family. The feud of Graines thus became a lordship and the castle of the same name, in the territory of Brusson, became one of the privileged residences of the most powerful Aosta Valley dynasty. Today, the castle appears dilapidated despite consolidation work in the early 20th century, but it retains its evocative appearance, perched on the edge of a precipice in a dominant position over the valley.
Tourism linked to the practice of Nordic skiing has completely revolutionised the economy of the village, which was once totally agricultural. Now Brusson is a renowned tourist centre in both winter and summer.
