Introduction

The Bossi Bivouac is located near the Breuil Pass at an altitude of 3345m. It was built in 1969 of the wooden semi-barrel type with sheet metal cladding; it has 9 places with mattresses, pots and pans and crockery, no cooker and water can only be found by melting snow nearby. It is used as a starting point for the ascent of the Matterhorn along the Fürggen ridge and is therefore mainly used by experienced mountaineers, nevertheless it can also be an interesting destination to arrive at the bivouac: its privileged position at the foot of the 'Gran Becca' allows you to observe it from very close up!

Description

The bivouac is dedicated to the memory of Engineer Oreste Bossi, who died in Macugnaga in 1967. In 1968, the family proposed to the Section's Governing Council to erect a bivouac in memory of the deceased family member. In September 1968, the Executive Council accepted the family's gift and appointed a commission to find a suitable location. Having discarded the solution of installing it under the north face of the Grivola due to the complexity and delays that the paperwork with the Park Management would have entailed, the Colle del Breuil was chosen. Work to install the bivouac began under the supervision of Alberto Bonomi and Gian Battista Zaroli on Tuesday, 2 September 1969, with the first transport of material to the col with the help of a helicopter. The transport of material took up the whole week due to the inclement weather, which got even worse on Sunday, 7 September, when a group of members arrived in Cervinia to set up the bivouac. Despite the terrible weather conditions, the construction of the bivouac was completed at 6 p.m. The inauguration took place the following week, Sunday 14 September 1969, in the presence of more than 150 members who braved the storm (again!) by taking the cable car up to Fürggen and walking along the ridge and the rocky drop known as the "Madonnina", equipped with fixed ropes by the Cervinia Guides.
