Introduction

The Antigine Bivouac, located at an altitude of 2,855 metres, is an alpine structure that offers shelter to hikers and mountaineers in the rugged landscape of the upper Val Troncone, at the Antigine Pass in the Pennine Alps. Built in 1984 and inaugurated on 5 August of the same year, the bivouac is managed by the Villadossola CAI section. The structure can accommodate up to 12 people and is located a few metres north of the Antigine Pass, on a rocky terrace overlooking the valley.

Description

The bivouac, made of Barcellan-type sheet metal, is equipped with bunks, blankets, lockers, folding tables, stools and tools such as shovels. Water can be found in a nearby pond. The surrounding area offers a spectacular view: to the south rises the Pizzo di Antigine, while to the north the mountain chain culminates with the Pizzo San Martino, the Stellihorn and the Pizzi di Cingino.
The bivouac is an ideal base for various hikes and ascents, such as those to the Pizzo di Antigine, the Pizzi di Cingino and the Stellihorn. It is part of the route of the Alta Via delle Alpi Ossolane and is a stage of the Grande Traversata delle Alpi (GTA), an itinerary linking the Maritime Alps with Trieste.
The main accesses to the bivouac include a path from Campliccioli, which can be walked in about four hours, and one from Cingino, which can be walked in about two and a half hours. The bivouac is also equipped with basic safety equipment and is under the jurisdiction of the Villadossola mountain rescue station.
Its history is linked to that of the Camposecco bivouac, with which it shares the construction type and part of the management. These two bivouacs were installed as part of a project to expand the alpine reception facilities in the area and represent the culmination of fifty years of activity by the Villadossola CAI section.
