Introduction

The Alpeggio Baou is a pastoral settlement located in the Great St. Bernard region in the Pennine Alps. This alpine pasture lies at an altitude of between 1,800 and 2,200 metres above sea level, offering a panoramic view of the valley and the surrounding peaks. Traditionally used during the summer months for grazing cattle, the alpine pasture is characterised by alpine meadows, rich in mountain flora, and stone structures typical of Valle d'Aosta rural architecture. The Baou alpine pasture is of historical and cultural importance, preserving centuries-old traditions linked to transhumance and cheese production, in particular alpine cheeses appreciated for their quality and authenticity. Its location, near the Great St Bernard Pass, makes it a place of interest for hikers and scholars of Alpine ethnography alike.
