The legend surrounding the castle's birth is rather macabre. Around 1450, a count of Montmayeur, who was in dispute with his cousin, was found guilty by the tribunal of Chambéry.
The count, in order to take his revenge, invited Guy de Feissigny (who was the president of the jury) to his home, making him believe that he had organised a party to reconcile with his cousin. The unfortunate man, discovering that he was the only one invited, became suspicious, but could no longer back out. The two of them ate and then the count took the guest into a room, and what were previously only suspicions turned into sad reality. Hooded men were waiting for him around a table covered with a black cloth. The landlord gave the order to cut off Feissigny's head and put it in a sack. The next day he went to Chambéry and arrived before the judges, handed them the sack, saying he had brought the document that was missing for his trial, and then fled at full speed! To protect himself, he hid in the mountains and built a fortress that was later called the Castle of Montmayeur.
