Thanks to the collaboration with the Cassin Foundation, at OFF we relive some moments of Riccardo's intense mountaineering life through images and films of his exploits
Riccardo Cassin was born in Savorgnano di San Vito al Tagliamento on 2 January 1909. In his career, without counting training, he accomplished around 2500 ascents, of which one hundred were absolute first ascents. He climbed in Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Spain, Yugoslavia, Scotland, the Caucasus, Alaska, Peru, Pakistan, Nepal and Japan. He has written eleven mountain books.
The Riccardo Cassin Foundation was set up to contribute to the protection, conservation and enhancement of Riccardo's cultural and mountaineering heritage, consisting of books, films, photographs, historical expeditions, articles, interviews and much more. From an idea of the family, which he himself strongly desired, the Foundation is gaining a recognised role beyond national borders. He was a Knight of the Grand Cross of the Italian Republic, decorated with the Cross for Military Valour for his actions during the partisan war (1943-45). He was a member of the Gruppo Ragni della Grignetta, and is an honorary member of the Italian Academic Alpine Club, the Groupe Haute Montagne and the Alpine Clubs of Italy, the United States, Spain, Switzerland, England and France.
The Riccardo Cassin Foundation is private, non-profit, and first and foremost enhances and makes known its assets, but also promotes knowledge of the mountain environment in terms of both the human and the mountaineering aspects. With this commitment, it organises cultural events, meetings and exhibitions, pursuing the main objective of its honorary president Riccardo who, in an ideal rope towards the summit, invites everyone to participate and share his great passion for the mountains.
OFF proposes four documentaries made by the Cassin Foundation using the videos and photographs that Riccardo took during his ascents: the voice of a speaker reads Cassin's diaries and accompanies the public no to the summit amidst fatigues, blizzards and emotions.
